Jonathan Zehr elected Editor of Journal of Phycology

I am thrilled to announce that Professor Jon Zehr, one of the founding and current PIs of C-MORE, has just been elected to the new Editorial Team of Journal of Phycology, the scientific journal of the Phycological Society of America. As many of you may know, Bob Sheath the current Editor-in-Chief is coming to the end of a successful term. Members of the Society decided that it would be desirable to replace Editor Sheath with a small Editorial Team and set out to search for four qualified, world-class phycologists to serve in that capacity. After an exhaustive search, the new Editorial Team was recently announced.

In addition to C-MORE co-PI Jon Zehr, the dream team includes Debashish Bhattacharya (Rutgers), Michael Graham (Moss Landing Marine Lab), and Arthur Grossman (Carnegie Institute for Science), not bad company. I have recently learned that the membership vote was overwhelming in favor of this distinguished group (94% in favor). Their duties will begin on 01 January 2012.

Congratulations, Jon!

video still of Gov. Neil Abercrombie Governor announces ultra-fast internet initiative

Hawai‘i’s Governor Neil Abercrombie, state officials, and business leaders gathered at C-MORE Hale to call for affordable ultra-high-speed Internet statewide. The target connection is 1 gigabit per second. The news conference was transmitted from C-MORE Hale’s conference center in high definition to neighbor islands, but technicians said with ultra-fast connections it would be faster and clearer. Read more about it and see a video report at KITV.com and Maui Now; and read more about it in the Governor’s press release, the Pacific Business News, and see this Flickr set.

C-MORE Hale is equipped to stream live HD video on the net; below is the recording of the live stream broadcast on Tuesday 23 August as well as the KITV broadcast.

Ocean and Earth Science Career Night at Kailua Intermediate School

C-MORE will host its first Ocean and Earth Science Career Night. Representatives from private businesses, federal and state government agencies and the UHM will share information about local career opportunities in the earth and ocean sciences. The event will be held at Kailua Intermediate School from 6-8 p.m. on October 27, 2011. The goal of the evening is to increase awareness of — and stimulate students' interest in pursuing — exciting local career opportunities in the earth and ocean sciences.

C-MORE Professional Development Training Program

The C-MORE Professional Development Training Program serves C-MORE graduate students and post-doctoral fellows at all six partner institutions. Training opportunities are provided in eight areas: Outreach, Leadership, Proposal Writing, Science Communication, Diversity, Teaching, Mentoring and Research Exchange. The website also features a Job Board, Career Resources and a short-course in ethics.

“BiG RAPA Expedition: Sea it Live”

Epic Tracker image Thursday 19 May 2001 at 6:30pm • Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Our 2010 expedition “BiG RAPA” explored unique habitats in the South Pacific subtropical ocean, where conditions range from those equivalent to the rainforest, flourishing with life, to the most difficult environment found in the desert, with very low life abundance. Please join us on a virtual field trip to explore the highlights of this expedition via short presentations by some of the BiG RAPA scientists, and videos produced daily aboard the ship. For more information, download the flyer PDF. This free public lecture series is administered by UH Sea Grant College Program.

Photo of Hesperides at Honolulu Harbor Spanish research vessel docked at Honolulu Harbor

Honolulu Harbor played host to the Spanish research vessel Hésperides on the half-way mark of an important around-the-world voyage assessing the impact of global climate change on the oceans and life below. Oceanography researchers are partnering with the Spanish expedition to share critical information about waters around the Hawaiian Islands. “We can exchange data on the local effects, what's happening around the Hawaiian islands and they can tell us what's happening in the middle of the Pacific,” said C-MORE director Dave Karl.

A message from C-MORE Director Dave Karl

Another week, another grand achievement for the C-MORE team. I am pleased to announce that two of our members have been named as 2010 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as a Fellow of AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers. Fellows are recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications.

Photo of Scott Doney Scott Doney was named “for fundamental contributions to our understanding of the ocean carbon cycle and its interactions with the Earth system and for his scientific leadership.” Scott has pioneered and led many important observation and modeling activities that have greatly improved our understanding of the microbially-driven biological pump. Moreover he has provided invaluable leadership to the JGOFS Synthesis and Modeling and to the Ocean Carbon Biogeochemistry programs, prior to joining C-MORE. As you all know, he was also recently nominated by President Obama to serve as Chief Scientist of NOAA and passed through the recent U.S. Senate confirmation process with flying colors. We expect to see him in his new post sometime soon.

Photo of Ed Delong Ed Delong was chosen for “his important contributions to microbial systems science, particularly to the study of bacterial and archaean genomics and oceanographic biomes.” Ed has received awards for excellence in research and mentoring from the European Geosciences Union, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the American Society for Microbiology, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He has contributed to the C-MORE team as co-PI and co-Director of C-MORE.

Congratulations to Scott and Ed. Keep up the great work!
Dave Karl

Angel White reports on C-MORE’s SUPER cruise

Angelicque (Angel) White, assistant professor of oceanography at Oregon State University (OSU) and former C-MORE postdoctoral scholar, said that exaggerated reports distract public attention from other oceanic garbage issues that need more study and don’t receive adequate media attention. “There is no doubt that the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans is troubling, but this kind of exaggeration undermines the credibility of scientists,” White said. Read more about it at Seadiscovery.com and in the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

Gibson receives UH 2010 Faculty Diversity Enhancement award

Barbara Gibson is the recipient of the 2010 Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award for her pioneering efforts with Ka ‘Imi ‘Ike and the C-MORE Scholars Program. Congratulations, Barbara! Read more about it in the UH press release.
