C-MORE is pleased to announce a partnership with Roosevelt High School. The centerpiece of this partnership is an authentic research experience, aimed at engaging biology students in cutting-edge research in microbial oceanography. Through this six-day experiment, students investigate factors that regulate microbial growth and distribution in the ocean. Students learn valuable laboratory techniques, experimental design principles, and hypothesis testing through data analysis and interpretation.

The student handout file (PDF) includes:

In the teacher outline (PDF), you’ll find a course schedule, a framework for introducing students to microbial oceanography, and instructions on sample collection and processing.

The raw data spreadsheet (.xls file) allows students to keep organized records of their observations and data.

The supply list is a handy checklist (.xls file) of all the items that you’ll need to perform the experiment.

The ESPERE Climate Encyclopedia (PDF) is a publication produced by the Max Planck Research School that contains useful background information on the effects of nutrients on primary production. Sections of this document are suggested as reading for students to prepare for the lab course.
