HOT Project README README - Edited 3/2002 This posting brings the zooplankton database current to August 2001. Dry weights are complete, and C/N values are forthcoming. Settled volume data and zooplankton abundances are complete to 1996. These data are no longer being compiled, but the samples are archived should future analyses become desirable. GF/F filters containing the 64µm - 200µm fraction are also archived for future analysis. An important note for HOT 128: A replacement net arrived very shortly before this cruise. Regular staff did not participate on HOT 128, and it was not noticed until after the cruise that the mesh was the incorrect size. Thus, samples collected on this cruise were obtained with a 420µm net rather than the standard 200µm net. The manufacturer corrected this by sending us a new net in time for HOT 129. Tows that state "NO DATA" were not obtained due to either technical difficulties or to poor weather. Gaps in sequential tow numbers are due to whole tows given to cooperating/visiting scientists. Description of Data Format: Tow #: The sequential number assigned to each successful tow. Date/Time: Date is in mm-dd-yyyy and time is in 24-hr format, Hawaiian Standard Time. Volume (m3): The amount of water filtered by the 200µm net. This is calculated from the reading of a General Oceanics flowmeter with a low-speed rotor. Depth (m): The maximum depth obtained during the tow. This is measured with a Richard Brancker Research, Ltd. XL-200 temperature/pressure recorder attached to the net. Fraction (µm): The zooplankton sample is filtered through a set of sieves to separate the animals into a range of sizes. Measurements of weight and C/N content are then made on each fraction. Wet wt (g/m2): The weight of each size fraction, before drying, per square meter of ocean sampled. Dry wt (g/m2): The weight of each size fraction, after drying, per square meter of ocean sampled.
