INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING FILES FROM THE NODC SHIPBOARD ADCP ANONYMOUS FTP AREA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Connect by Anonymous FTP to a SUN Workstation at the University of Hawaii by typing ftp kapau.soest.hawaii.edu In response to 'Name' enter 'anonymous' In response to 'Password' enter your own home userid@address Then type cd /pub/adcp get read.me bye (optionally exit to view read.me) Shipboard ADCP Center - How to Obtain Data ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The shipboard ADCP data are available as two data types: densely-sampled set (~10 Mbyte per cruise-month) as CODAS binary block files of the currents and ancillary data at the interval with which the data were recorded and processed, and an ASCII standard subset of the currents, ship speed, and transducer temperature at hourly and 10 m depth intervals. For each cruise, a metadata file is prepared for summarizing specifics about the instrumentation, cruise activities, processing, and calibration. An inventory browser is available via anonymous ftp for SUN and SGI workstations and for IBM-PC computers using DOS. The browser is downloaded and executed on your machine. Within the WWW home page, one may also access the Online Inventory system. From queries of the database or from the inventory lists, one may send us a list of SAC IDs for specifying desired cruises, or grab the data yourself from the Online Database system. The densely_sampled set is available as binary CODAS block files. CODAS software is compatible to most workstations and IBM-PC compatible computers and is provided if necessary. CODAS data extraction subset software and manual are geared to data users. The complete CODAS software and manual are geared to data collectors and processors and includes steps on how to load ping files (data from DAS), process, calibrate, and apply navigation data. Both software sets are available via anonymous ftp or paper mail and include a utility for translation of the block files between machines with different binary numbering conventions. A complete ASCII dump of the CODAS block files (about 50 Mbytes per cruise-month) can also be provided. The standard subset and metadata files are maintained online in an anonymous ftp area and are available free of charge. The format of the standard subset is ASCII. Both data types, metadata files, inventories, and cruise tracks can be obtained via conventional storage media (diskettes or DAT, eXabyte, or magnetic tapes) for a fee. The densely-sampled data set may also be made available on anonymous ftp on a case by case basis. In general, NODC products and services are provided on a cost recovery basis. Researchers who submit data to the NODC, however, are eligible to receive NODC data on exchange. All orders from non-Federal customers must be prepaid, unless the customer meets strict criteria for a waiver of this requirement. Turn around time is about two to three weeks. Prepayment may be made by: Check (in U.S. funds drawn on a bank in the United States, made payable to "U.S. Department of Commerce/NOAA/NODC") Money order Credit card (VISA and MasterCard only) Purchase orders can be accepted from non-Federal customers only with prior approval from the NODC. If this authorization is not obtained beforehand, an additional charge of $24 will be added to the total charges for that order. NODC user charges as of FY 1995 are: Magnetic tapes 9-track (1600 bpi), standard length (2400 ft.) ........ $79 9-track (6250 bpi), standard length (2400 ft.) ........ $93 9-track (6250 bpi), extra long (3600 ft.) ............. $99 IBM 3480 cartridge .................................... $110 Exabyte (8mm helical scan) cartridge .................. $127 4mm DAT tape .......................................... $135 Magnetic diskettes 5.25-inch, double sided/high density (DS/HD)............ $36 3.5-inch, double sided/high density (DS/HD)............. $39 Prepayments, requests, or comments should be directed to: Mr. Patrick Caldwell NODC Hawaii Liaison Officer Shipboard ADCP Center Dept. of Oceanography University of Hawaii, MSB 317 Honolulu, Hawaii 96822 Internet: caldwell@soest.hawaii.edu fax: 808-956-4104 office phone: 808-956-4105
