Abstract

The Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) Data Organization and Graphical System (DOGS) is a MATLAB 4.2 based user friendly program that facilitates access to the HOT program data base. In its present form, HOT-DOGS consists of 6 general modules: Animate, Contour, Data, Display, Series and Utility.

Animate is used to make graphical movies of either CTD or bottle data. Once a movie is made, frames can be viewed one at a time, forward or backward, or the entire movie can be run in its entirety. The Contour menu item, as its name implies, is used to generate contour plots: bottle, CTD (both time-series or a single cruise), flow cytometry (bacterial/picoplankton cell numbers), particle flux or primary productivity data can be contoured. The modules in the Data menu were developed primarily for facilitating the initial screening of raw or processed data. It consists of 3 main submodules: one to load various data sets so that HOT-DOGS can later manipulate them, one to aid in quality controlling the CTD and bottle data, and one to make the plots for the annual HOT Data Report. Display is used to make x vs. y plots of bottle, CTD, both bottle and CTD (to aid in quality controlling), flow cytometry (bacterial/picoplankton cell numbers), particle flux and primary productivity data. Some allow the displaying of historical data and most allow the user to hold the current plot to diplay multiple data sets. Ratios between bottle values can also be displayed. The only restriction is that data values must be taken on the same cast. Series is used to compute integrals, means/standard deviations and pressure or potential density horizons of bottle, CTD, flow cytometry (bacterial/picoplankton cell numbers) or primary productivity data. Once the values have been calculated, they may be saved to a file for later manipulation. The Utility menu contains other modules that do not fit into any of the previous 5 categories. Currently, there are two general submodules. The first is used to calculate the means and standard deviations of bottle, flow cytometry (bacterial/picoplankton cell numbers) or primary productivity data at specific depth intervals. The second is used to calculate means and standard deviations of monthly, quarterly or yearly groups of data. This way, general trends in the data set can easily be viewed.
